Rainwater harvesting is a practical water-conservation technique in which rainwater is collected from suitable catchment surfaces and either stored for later use or directed to a recharge system. Increasing water demand, groundwater depletion, urbanisation and irregular rainfall make efficient management of rainwater increasingly important. This paper presents the basic principles, components, methods, methodology, benefits, limitations and applications of rainwater harvesting. The paper also discusses rooftop collection, filtration, storage and groundwater recharge. Proper planning, maintenance and safe treatment are essential when harvested rainwater is intended for domestic use. Rainwater harvesting can reduce dependence on conventional water supplies and can support sustainable water management when designed according to local rainfall, catchment area, soil and water requirements.
KEYWORDS
Rainwater harvesting is an effective approach for conserving rainwater and improving water management at building and site level. A suitable system combines a properly selected catchment, conveyance arrangement, first-flush provision, filtration and either storage or groundwater recharge. The system should be designed according to local rainfall, site conditions, intended use and applicable technical requirements. With proper operation and maintenance, rainwater harvesting can contribute to reducing water stress, managing runoff and supporting sustainable development.
