The Rayleigh distribution has come to occupy a central position in the statistical modelling of wireless communication, particularly in the characterization of fading channels. This paper reviews the application of the Rayleigh distribution in wireless communication systems, focusing largely on channel modelling under different fading environments. The work outlines the major developments, the methodologies employed, and the analytical insights obtained, emphasising the utility of the model in optimising network performance and system reliability. The theoretical discussion is supported by graphical analyses of system performance, illustrating the behaviour of the distribution under distinct scenarios. The findings reflect the importance of statistical modelling in addressing the complexities of the wireless channel, and lay a foundation for further developments.
KEYWORDS
The Rayleigh distribution continues to hold a vital position in the field of wireless communication, particularly in the modelling and analysis of fading channels under Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) conditions. Through this study, the theoretical foundations and the practical implications of Rayleigh fading have been examined in detail. The simulation results and graphical analyses have confirmed that Rayleigh fading significantly impacts both the reliability and the efficiency of wireless communication systems. High bit error rates (BER) at low SNR levels, and limited channel capacity growth at higher SNR, highlight the challenges posed by such fading environments. Without a dominant line-of-sight component, signals suffer from severe multipath effects, leading to performance degradation if not properly addressed. In addition, the comparison between Rayleigh and Rician fading scenarios has further shown that Rayleigh environments are more demanding, requiring advanced system designs to preserve an acceptable quality of service. Techniques such as diversity methods, adaptive modulation, and robust error control strategies are essential in order to offset the effects of severe fading. This review not only illustrates the enduring relevance of Rayleigh fading in current communication technologies but also points towards its continued significance in emerging areas such as 5G, vehicular networks, and the Internet of Things (IoT). As wireless networks become denser and more complex, understanding and mitigating Rayleigh fading will be critical for ensuring system reliability, efficiency, and user satisfaction. In conclusion, the Rayleigh fading model remains a cornerstone of wireless communication research and system design. The insights gained through the theoretical analysis and simulations in this study can serve as a valuable reference for engineers, researchers, and system designers working to develop the next generation of robust and efficient wireless communication systems.
