Road accidents caused by driver drowsiness and inattention are a persistent public safety concern worldwide. This paper presents a vision-based real-time driver monitoring system built entirely using OpenCV and the dlib facial landmark predictor—without relying on MediaPipe. The system continuously processes video frames captured from a standard webcam, localising the driver’s face and extracting 68 precise facial landmarks. Eye closure is quantified through the Eye Aspect Ratio (EAR), while mouth behaviour is tracked via the Mouth Aspect Ratio (MAR). When EAR drops below a calibrated threshold for a sustained number of frames, an audible alert is raised to warn the driver. Yawning, detected by a high MAR value, serves as an additional cue for fatigue. Head pose estimation through landmark geometry provides distraction detection by flagging significant deviations from a frontal gaze. The approach is evaluated on the NTHU Drowsy Driver Detection dataset and the UTA-RLDD dataset, showing competitive accuracy at low computational cost. The lightweight architecture makes deployment feasible on embedded platforms such as Raspberry Pi.

This paper described a real-time driver drowsiness and distrac- tion detection system built on OpenCV and dlib facial landmark analysis. The pipeline detects eye closure through EAR, yawn- ing through MAR and head orientation through PnP-based pose estimation, issuing an audible alert whenever a sustained drowsi- ness or distraction event is detected. Evaluation on the NTHU Drowsy Driver Detection dataset yielded an average accuracy of 89.0% across four conditions, and generalisation testing on UTA-RLDD confirmed an F1-score of 82.4% for drowsy de- tection in naturalistic recordings. The system operates at over 25 fps on a mid-range CPU, making it a viable candidate for deployment in low-cost embedded platforms. Future work will focus on personalised calibration, more robust face detection under sunglasses, and multi-modal fusion with vehicle telemetry data.
