Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy, supporting over 58% of the rural population. Plant diseases cause annual yield losses of 20-40% globally, costing Indian farmers billions of rupees. Early and accurate detection is critical for timely intervention and sustainable farming. This project presents a Smart Farming system leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning to automatically detect plant diseases from leaf images. The system is built on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained on 20,624 images across 15 disease categories covering tomato, potato, and pepper plants. Class imbalance (17,409 diseased vs 3,215 healthy) was resolved through targeted augmentation, expanding the healthy class to 8,000 images. The model achieves 97.82% accuracy, 99.92% precision, 96.90% recall, 98.39% F1 score, and an AUC of 0.9998 on the test set at threshold 0.35 — assessed as Deployment Ready. The system integrates Google Gemini 2.5 Flash as the AI chatbot engine, with carefully engineered system prompts that maintain context from the plant disease diagnosis and provide personalized advice. The chatbot is multilingual, supporting English, Hindi, and Marathi — enabling farmers across Maharashtra and beyond to interact in their native language. The complete system is deployed on Hugging Face Spaces using Docker, providing a publicly accessible URL for farmer use without requiring any software installation. The backend is a FastAPI application with a farmer-friendly HTML interface, AI solution engine (Geminipowered with knowledge base fallback), and a context-aware conversational chatbot.
KEYWORDS
This work presents a production-ready Smart Farming system that integrates deep learning, Google Gemini AI, multilingual support, and cloud deployment for accurate and accessible plant disease diagnosis. The proposed framework includes data preprocessing, targeted augmentation for class imbalance reduction, CNN-based disease classification, threshold optimization, and AI-assisted recommendation generation. The trained CNN model achieved 97.82% accuracy, 99.92% precision, 96.90% recall, 98.39% F1-score, and an AUC of 0.9998, demonstrating high reliability for real-world applications. The integration of Google Gemini 2.5 Flash enables context-aware, disease-specific recommendations in English, Hindi, and Marathi, improving the usability of the system for diverse users. Furthermore, deployment on Hugging Face Spaces using Docker and GitHub Actions provides a scalable and publicly accessible platform. The proposed system offers a practical solution for early plant disease detection and has the potential to support precision agriculture by enabling timely diagnosis and informed crop management decisions.
