The electric motorcycle industry in India has emerged as a significant component of the country's transition toward sustainable transportation. Rising fuel prices, increasing environmental concerns, and supportive government policies such as the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme have accelerated the adoption of electric two-wheelers. Despite this growth, the industry faces several challenges that hinder its large-scale expansion and market penetration. This study analyzes the key challenges affecting the Indian electric motorcycle industry, including high battery costs, limited charging infrastructure, range anxiety, technological constraints, supply chain dependencies, and consumer awareness issues. The research also examines manufacturing challenges such as raw material procurement, battery management, quality control, and compliance with safety standards. Furthermore, factors influencing consumer acceptance, government regulations, and market competition are evaluated. The study is based on a review of existing literature, industry reports, government policies, and market trends. Findings indicate that while electric motorcycles offer significant advantages in terms of reduced operating costs and environmental benefits, challenges related to infrastructure development, battery technology, and affordability remain major barriers to widespread adoption. The research concludes that advancements in battery technology, expansion of charging networks, supportive policy frameworks, and increased investment in research and development are essential for the sustainable growth of the industry. The outcomes of this study provide valuable insights for manufacturers, policymakers, researchers, and investors seeking to promote the development of electric motorcycles in India and contribute to a cleaner and more energy-efficient transportation system.
KEYWORDS
The electric motorcycle industry in India is emerging as a key component of the country's sustainable transportation ecosystem. The study identified several challenges, including high battery costs, inadequate charging infrastructure, range anxiety, dependence on imported components, and consumer awareness issues. These factors continue to affect the growth and widespread adoption of electric motorcycles. Despite these challenges, the industry shows strong growth potential due to supportive government policies, technological advancements, increasing environmental awareness, and rising fuel prices. Continuous improvements in battery technology, expansion of charging networks, localization of component manufacturing, and enhanced consumer education can help overcome existing barriers. The study concludes that with effective collaboration among manufacturers, policymakers, and technology providers, the electric motorcycle industry can achieve sustainable growth and play a significant role in India's transition toward clean, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation.
