Local markets are important urban spaces that reflect the cultural, social, and economic life of a community. They do more than just sell goods; they represent identity and heritage. This research looks at Chowk Bazaar in Bhopal as a local market that helps strengthen community identity and supports urban culture. Through field observation, interviews, and spatial analysis, the study examines how architecture, social interactions, and economic activities come together to keep the market lively. The findings show that Chowk Bazaar serves as a key cultural hub for the city, promoting inclusivity, cultural exchange, and a sense of belonging. The paper concludes with suggestions for revitalizing traditional markets in ways that maintain their character while meeting modern urban needs. Its narrow lanes, traditional shops, and the ongoing presence of local crafts, textiles, perfumes (ittar), and cuisine reflect the city’s historical background and ongoing cultural practices. These interactions create a sense of belonging by maintaining long-standing trade practices, preserving artisanal skills, and providing a space for rituals and celebrations during significant cultural events. From the view of urban anthropology and cultural geography, the market appears as a place of identity expression where residents reaffirm shared histories, navigate modern influences, and resist the uniform trends in global retail and urban redevelopment.
