The rapid growth of digital documents in academic, professional, and business domains has created significant challenges in information retrieval and knowledge extraction. Portable Document Format (PDF) files often contain large volumes of unstructured information, making it time-consuming for users to identify key insights and relevant content. Traditional document summarization approaches frequently generate generic summaries without considering contextual relevance and document structure. To address this challenge, this paper presents Brevity.AI, a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform designed for context-aware PDF summarization. The proposed system enables users to upload PDF documents, extract textual content through document parsing and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when required, and generate concise summaries using a hybrid summarization pipeline. The workflow combines extractive techniques based on Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) for identifying important content with transformer-based abstractive models to produce coherent and human-readable summaries. Users can customize summary length and format according to their requirements, while the platform provides secure document management and summary export capabilities. By integrating document processing, keyword extraction, and advanced natural language processing techniques into a unified cloud-based platform, Brevity.AI aims to reduce document analysis time and improve accessibility to critical information. The proposed solution offers a scalable and user-friendly approach for efficient document understanding across educational, research, and professional environments.
KEYWORDS
This paper presented the design, architecture, and implementation of Brevity.AI, a robust, cloud-native Software as a Service (SaaS) platform engineered to solve the computational and cognitive bottlenecks associated with long-form document comprehension. By transitioning away from purely statistical data-mining and standalone commercial APIs, this project successfully demonstrated the efficacy of a hybrid NLP pipeline. The integration of an algorithmic Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) filtering layer alongside an open-source generative Transformer model (BART) proved highly successful in mitigating the strict token-limit constraints typical of deep learning models. This hybrid approach, orchestrated via a high-performance FastAPI backend and supported by scalable AWS cloud storage, ensured that complex multi-page PDFs—including those requiring Optical Character Recognition (OCR)—were summarized with high contextual accuracy and grammatical fluency. Furthermore, the inclusion of multi-modal outputs, specifically regional language translation and Text-to-Speech (TTS) capabilities, significantly enhanced the platform's accessibility. Ultimately, Brevity.AI provides an optimal, self-hosted solution for professionals and academics seeking rapid, context-aware information retrieval.
