A Safety Management System (SMS) is a structured and systematic approach used by organizations to manage occupational health and safety risks, reduce accidents, and ensure regulatory compliance. Modern industries operate in complex environments where hazards can significantly affect workers, assets, and business continuity. The implementation of an effective SMS enables organizations to proactively identify hazards, assess risks, implement control measures, and continuously improve safety performance. International standards such as ISO 45001 have provided organizations with globally recognized frameworks for occupational health and safety management. Research indicates that successful SMS implementation contributes to reduced workplace injuries, improved employee participation, enhanced safety culture, and increased organizational productivity. This paper examines the concept, components, implementation process, benefits, challenges, and future trends of Safety Management Systems.
KEYWORDS
Safety Management Systems have become essential tools for managing occupational health and safety risks in modern organizations. By integrating safety into organizational processes, SMS promotes proactive hazard identification, risk control, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. ISO 45001 provides a globally recognized framework that supports the development of effective safety management practices. Organizations that successfully implement SMS benefit from reduced accidents, improved productivity, enhanced employee well-being, and sustainable operational performance. Future developments in digital technologies and predictive analytics are expected to further strengthen the effectiveness of Safety Management Systems.
