The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) represents a vast intellectual tradition that integrates philosophy, science, technology, medicine, and environmental knowledge accumulated over millennia. Ancient Indian texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, and scientific treatises contain profound insights into mathematics, astronomy, medicine, metallurgy, agriculture, and ecological balance. These traditions demonstrate a systematic approach to knowledge production based on observation, experimentation, and logical reasoning. This article explores the historical roots of scientific ideas embedded in the Indian knowledge system and examines their relevance in contemporary scientific discourse. By analysing classical Sanskrit texts, historical records, and modern scholarship, the study highlights the contributions of Indian scholars in fields such as mathematics, astronomy, Ayurveda, and environmental science. It also evaluates how traditional knowledge systems can contribute to modern scientific research, sustainable development, and interdisciplinary education. The paper argues that the integration of indigenous scientific knowledge with modern scientific frameworks can lead to innovative solutions to global challenges such as climate change, healthcare crises, and sustainable resource management.
KEYWORDS
The Indian Knowledge System represents a rich intellectual heritage that contributed significantly to the development of science and technology. From mathematics and astronomy to medicine and environmental science, ancient Indian scholars developed sophisticated knowledge systems based on observation, experimentation, and logical reasoning. The study demonstrates that scientific inquiry in ancient India was deeply interconnected with philosophical and ethical traditions. Although historical disruptions led to the decline of some scientific institutions, many knowledge traditions survived and continue to influence modern science. The revival of interest in indigenous knowledge systems provides an opportunity to integrate traditional wisdom with contemporary scientific research. Such integration can contribute to sustainable development, holistic healthcare, and interdisciplinary education.Recognizing the scientific contributions of ancient Indian scholars not only enriches our understanding of global scientific history but also offers valuable insights for addressing modern challenges.
