Abstract

This research paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (SEBI) regulatory framework and initiatives aimed at investor protection within the Indian capital market. It explores SEBI's foundational mandate, its multi-faceted approach encompassing market intermediary regulation, stringent disclosure requirements, and robust enforcement actions against malpractices like insider trading and market manipulation. The paper details key safeguarding mechanisms such as investor education programs, the SCORES grievance redressal platform, and the Investor Protection and Education Fund. Through an examination of SEBI's interventions, including a case study on the Jane Street allegations and retail investor losses in derivatives, the report assesses their impact on fostering market integrity and investor confidence. It further identifies persistent challenges, including the evolving nature of financial scams, financial literacy gaps, and the delicate balance between regulatory burden and market growth. Finally, the paper discusses future trends and proposed reforms, such as leveraging advanced technologies and strengthening regulations for new financial instruments, offering recommendations for further enhancing investor protection in India's dynamic capital market.

Full Article/Conclusion

SEBI has played a transformative role in shaping the Indian capital market, evolving from its establishment in 1992 into a sophisticated and proactive regulator.1 Its multi-pronged approach, characterized by robust regulatory frameworks, stringent enforcement actions, comprehensive investor education programs, and efficient grievance redressal mechanisms, has significantly contributed to fostering market integrity and bolstering investor confidence.1 Key achievements include the operationalization and continuous enhancement of the SCORES platform, the introduction of Investor Charters across various segments, and ongoing updates to market infrastructure and trading mechanisms, such as the T+0 settlement cycle and enhanced client fund protection measures.
