Rapid urbanization and the increasing number of vehicles on road networks have led to severe traffic congestion in urban and metropolitan areas. One of the major challenges arising from this congestion is the de- lay faced by emergency vehicles, particularly ambulances, while navigating through traffic intersections. Such de- lays can significantly affect emergency response times, re- duce the efficiency of medical services, and negatively im- pact patient survival rates. Conventional traffic manage- ment systems operate on fixed signal timings and lack the ability to dynamically prioritize emergency vehicles during critical situations. To address this issue, this pa- per presents a Smart Emergency Corridor Creation Using IoT-Based Traffic Control System that enables real-time ambulance tracking and automated traffic signal manage- ment. The proposed system integrates GPS technology, ESP32 microcontrollers, and LoRa communication mod- ules to establish seamless communication between ambu- lances and traffic signal controllers. The ambulance con- tinuously transmits its location data, allowing the system to identify its route and predict its arrival at upcoming intersections. To determine the most efficient emergency route, the system employs Dijkstra’s shortest path algo- rithm, which dynamically computes the optimal path from the ambulance’s current location to the destination hospi- tal by evaluating real-time traffic density and junction dis- tances. This computed route is communicated through a dedicated mobile application that provides role-based ac- cess to three user categories — Ambulance Driver, traffic administrator, and hospital personnel. The driver inter- face displays the optimal navigated route and upcoming signal status in real time, the admin interface enables cen- tralized junction monitoring and manual override capa- bility, and the hospital interface provides live ambulance ETA and incoming patient alerts. Based on this infor- mation, traffic signals are automatically adjusted to pro- vide a green corridor, ensuring uninterrupted movement of the ambulance. Additionally, the system incorporates a centralized monitoring platform that facilitates real-time tracking, traffic analysis, and decision-making. The pro- posed solution aims to reduce ambulance travel time, min- imize delays at intersections, improve emergency response efficiency, and enhance overall traffic management. Ex- perimental implementation and testing demonstrate the effectiveness of the system in creating a reliable and intel- ligent emergency traffic control mechanism. The proposed approach contributes to the development of smart city in- frastructure by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) tech- nologies for efficient and life-saving transportation man-agement.

This paper presented a Smart Emergency Corridor Cre- ation System that integrates GPS-based ambulance tracking, LoRa wireless communication, and automated traffic signal control to reduce emergency vehicle delays at urban intersec- tions. The system utilizes a Neo-6M GPS module, SX1278 LoRa transceivers, and ESP32 microcontrollers to track am- bulance location in real time and coordinate signal switching across multiple traffic junctions simultaneously. The implementation demonstrated reliable GPS acquisi- tion and LoRa-based communication between the ambulance unit and junction controllers, with consistent proximity detec- tion and accurate automated signal switching upon ambulance approach. The integration of Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm enabled optimal route computation directly on the embedded ESP32 platform, while the role-based mobile application pro- vided real-time visibility to the ambulance driver, traffic ad- ministrator, and hospital personnel throughout the emergency response operation. The proposed system successfully created a continuous multi-junction green corridor for the ambulance, eliminating the need for manual intervention or siren-based road clearing in test scenarios. The distributed IoT architecture, combin- ing low-power LoRa communication with ESP32-based sig- nal control, demonstrated feasibility for real-world deploy- ment within smart city infrastructure. The results confirm that the proposed approach contributes meaningfully to improv- ing emergency response efficiency, reducing ambulance travel time, and enhancing urban traffic management.
