Road safety is a critical concern worldwide, with a significant number of accidents caused by human negligence such as drunk driving and failure to wear protective gear. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Smart Helmet System that integrates Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enhance rider safety and reduce accident risks. The proposed system incorporates an alcohol detection sensor to monitor the rider’s breath and prevent the motorcycle from starting if alcohol consumption is detected beyond a safe threshold. Additionally, a helmet detection mechanism ensures that the bike ignition system is enabled only when the rider is wearing the helmet properly. Furthermore, the system includes an accident detection module, which utilizes sensors such as accelerometers to identify sudden impacts or abnormal motion patterns. In the event of an accident, the system automatically sends the rider’s real-time GPS location to predefined emergency contacts, enabling faster response and medical assistance. The integration of wireless communication modules ensures seamless data transmission and system reliability. By combining safety enforcement and emergency response features, the proposed smart helmet provides an automated and efficient solution to minimize road accidents and enhance rider protection. This IoT-based approach demonstrates significant potential for improving transportation safety and promoting responsible riding behavior.
KEYWORDS
The proposed Smart Helmet system provides an effective and reliable solution for enhancing motorcycle rider safety through IoT-based automation. By implementing a dual NodeMCU architecture with Bluetooth communication, the system ensures that critical safety conditions are verified at the helmet level before enabling vehicle ignition. The integration of an IR sensor for helmet detection and an MQ-3 sensor for alcohol detection successfully prevents unsafe riding practices such as riding without a helmet or under the influence of alcohol. The use of a master–slave communication model improves system modularity and ensures secure data transmission between the helmet and bike units. Furthermore, the inclusion of an MPU6050 sensor for accident detection and a GPS–GSM based alert system enables real-time emergency response by sending the rider’s location to predefined contacts. This significantly reduces response time during critical situations and increases the chances of timely medical assistance. Overall, the system demonstrates a cost-effective, scalable, and practical approach to improving road safety and minimizing human errors. Future enhancements such as AI-based monitoring, cloud integration, and advanced communication technologies can further improve system efficiency, accuracy, and real-world adaptability.
