Abstract

The rapid urbanization of modern societies, coupled with increasing transportation demands, has intensified the need for intelligent, sustainable, and efficient mobility solutions. Smart Mobility and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have emerged as transformative approaches that integrate advanced digital technologies, communication networks, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, cloud computing, and autonomous systems to improve transportation efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This paper presents a comprehensive review and critical analysis of emerging trends, technologies, opportunities, and challenges associated with smart mobility and ITS. Through a systematic review of recent literature published between 2015 and 2026, the study examines the evolution of intelligent transportation ecosystems, highlighting advancements in connected vehicles, autonomous transportation, smart infrastructure, Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), digital twins, and sustainable mobility solutions. The review identifies key research themes, compares existing technological approaches, and evaluates their practical implications across urban and interurban transportation networks. Despite significant progress, several challenges remain, including cybersecurity threats, data privacy concerns, interoperability issues, infrastructure limitations, regulatory uncertainties, and ethical considerations surrounding AI-driven decision-making. The findings reveal that successful implementation of ITS requires coordinated efforts among governments, transportation agencies, technology providers, and citizens. Furthermore, the paper develops a conceptual framework illustrating the interaction between emerging technologies and mobility outcomes while proposing future research directions focusing on AI-enabled optimization, green transportation, federated learning, edge computing, and resilient transportation ecosystems. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge by providing a holistic understanding of smart mobility innovations and offering strategic insights for researchers, policymakers, and industry practitioners seeking to develop sustainable and intelligent transportation systems in the era of digital transformation.

Full Article/Conclusion

Smart Mobility and Intelligent Transportation Systems represent transformative approaches to addressing contemporary transportation challenges. Emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, IoT, big data analytics, blockchain, autonomous vehicles, digital twins, and 5G communication networks are fundamentally reshaping transportation ecosystems. The review demonstrates that intelligent transportation solutions offer substantial benefits in terms of safety, efficiency, sustainability, and user experience. Nevertheless, significant challenges remain, including cybersecurity risks, privacy concerns, infrastructure limitations, interoperability issues, and regulatory uncertainties. The proposed framework highlights the interconnected nature of emerging technologies and their collective contribution to transportation innovation. Future transportation systems will increasingly rely on integrated, data-driven, and sustainable mobility solutions capable of supporting growing urban populations and evolving societal needs. By synthesizing existing knowledge and identifying future research opportunities, this study contributes to the advancement of smart mobility research while providing actionable insights for policymakers, industry practitioners, and academic researchers.
