Waste management has become a major challenge due to rapid urbanization and population growth. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Smart Robotic Dustbin using ESP32 DevKit V1 for intelligent waste management applications. The proposed system uses ultrasonic sensors for automatic lid opening and obstacle detection, while DC motors and a motor driver module provide robotic movement functionality. The ESP32 controller enables wireless communication through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies.

The management of municipal solid waste remains one of the most pressing challenges in modern urban environments. Traditional systems, based on static collection schedules, often result in overflowing bins, wasted resources, and unhygienic conditions. The proposed Smart Dustbin system addresses these limitations by integrating IoT sensors, wireless communication, and autonomous mobility to enable real‑time monitoring and dynamic route optimization. By incorporating features such as voice‑activated lid control, obstacle avoidance, automated waste segregation, and self‑charging mechanisms, the system not only enhances operational efficiency but also promotes hygiene and accessibility. This innovation reduces manual intervention, minimizes health risks for both citizens and waste workers, and contributes to sustainable waste management practices. Furthermore, the Smart Dustbin aligns with the vision of smart cities by leveraging AI and cloud‑based analytics to optimize collection schedules, reduce fuel consumption, and improve recycling rates. While challenges remain in terms of scalability, infrastructure compatibility, and citizen participation, the project demonstrates a clear pathway toward intelligent, autonomous, and eco‑friendly waste management solutions. In essence, the Smart Dustbin system represents a transformative step toward creating cleaner, safer, and smarter urban spaces, contributing meaningfully to environmental sustainability and public health.
