Urban transportation systems are increasingly affected by traffic congestion, long waiting times, and inefficient fixed signal control, resulting in fuel wastage and higher emissions. This study investigates the design and development of an adaptive traffic signal control system using machine learning and computer vision to optimize traffic flow dynamically. Real-time or simulated traffic footage is processed using the YOLO algorithm for vehicle detection and counting, and the extracted data are used to train predictive models that estimate optimal green light durations. The system is implemented and visualized through a Python/Flask/React interface, with key performance indicators such as average waiting time, throughput, and queue length analyzed for evaluation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed machine learning–based adaptive traffic control significantly improves traffic efficiency and reduces congestion compared to traditional fixed-time systems. The findings highlight the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance urban mobility and support the development of intelligent transportation frameworks.
KEYWORDS
The development of the proposed Smart Traffic Management System demonstrates the practical application of computer vision and intelligent decision-making techniques in solving urban traffic challenges. By integrating real-time vehicle detection and adaptive signal control, the system provides an automated approach for managing varying traffic conditions more efficiently than conventional methods. The implementation validates the feasibility of combining detection and prediction mechanisms within a unified framework. Experimental observations indicate that the system can successfully detect vehicles, estimate traffic density, and dynamically allocate signal durations according to congestion levels. The adaptive behavior of the system improves traffic movement by prioritizing highly congested lanes while maintaining balanced signal distribution. The modular design also enables stable operation and supports future expansion without major architectural changes. The proposed framework establishes a foundation for next-generation intelligent transportation systems and contributes toward smart city development. Future improvements can include integration of emergency vehicle prioritization, multi-intersection coordination, IoT connectivity, and predictive traffic analytics to create a more advanced and fully autonomous traffic management ecosystem.
