Industrial training forms an essential part of the Diploma in Civil Engineering curriculum, allowing students to relate classroom knowledge to real manufacturing practice. This paper presents a study of structural steel fabrication as observed and practised during a twelve-week industrial training programme carried out at Diamond Engineering, Ahilyanagar, a structural steel fabrication and engineering unit. The paper discusses the manufacturing workflow of structural steel hardware, including foundation bolts, sag rods and bracing members, covering the stages of measurement, cutting, filing, threading, bending, bolting, plating, painting, sorting, bunching and dispatch. It also examines the quality control instruments and safety practices used at each stage of production. The study shows that a structured, machine-assisted fabrication workflow improves dimensional accuracy, consistency, and product reliability compared with informal manual practice, while also highlighting the continuing importance of engineering judgement, inspection and documentation in a small, growing fabrication enterprise.
KEYWORDS
Structural steel fabrication, as observed during industrial training at Diamond Engineering, plays an important role in civil engineering by supplying the foundation bolts, sag rods, bracing members and allied hardware used in industrial sheds and structural frameworks. The training provided practical exposure to the complete manufacturing workflow, from raw material preparation through filing, cutting, threading, bending, bolting, plating, painting, sorting, bunching and dispatch. Compared with purely manual fabrication, a workshop combining hand skills with dedicated machinery and measuring instruments offers important advantages such as improved dimensional accuracy, consistent thread quality, better surface protection and more reliable batch production. However, machinery alone is not sufficient to guarantee quality. Systematic inspection, correct use of measuring instruments, proper sorting and classification, safety awareness and sound engineering judgement remain essential throughout the fabrication process. Industrial training of this kind is therefore an important part of preparing civil engineering students to understand how the structural hardware specified in their design work is actually manufactured, checked and delivered.
