Abstract—Modern front-end systems operate within increasingly complex design ecosystems spanning mul-tiple platforms, frameworks, and release cadences. This complexity introduces two persistent operational risks: (1) visual regression defects during UI evolution and (2) engineering hand-off friction between design and devel-opment teams. Design Tokens - structured, platform-agnostic representations of design decisions - have emerged as a systematic mechanism to encode visual logic into software artifacts. This paper systematizes the role of Design Tokens in UI engineering, presenting architectural models, workflow integration strategies, and empirical impact analysis on regression rates and cross-functional collaboration efficiency.
KEYWORDS
Design Tokens represent a paradigmatic shift in UI engineering—from artisanal styling to systematized interface computation. A. From Static Styling to Executable Design Historically, UI implementation required interpretive translation of design artifacts into code. This translation layer introduced ambiguity, drift, and regression. Tokenization eliminates interpretive gaps by: • Encoding visual decisions as software contracts
