For decades, enterprise networking was defined by rigid, hardware-centric architectures that struggled to adapt to the cloud era. The emergence of Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) represents a fundamental shift from manual configuration to automated, policy- driven connectivity. This paper explores the transition from traditional MPLS systems to modern SD-WAN architectures. Using a primary study of 100 IT professionals, we examine real-world adoption metrics, cost efficiencies, and performance gains. The results suggest that while legacy systems offered reliability, SD-WAN provides the agility necessary for the modern âwork-from-anywhereâ environment.
