Investment banking has undergone significant transformation since its inception, driven by technological innovation, regulatory shifts, globalization, and changing client expectations. This paper explores the historical evolution of investment banking from its early foundations in 19th-century Europe and the United States to its current role as a key pillar in global financial markets. It examines how major eventsâincluding the Great Depression, deregulation in the 1980s, the 2008 financial crisis, and the recent digital revolutionâhave reshaped investment banking practices and business models. The study also analyse contemporary trends such as the rise of fintech, increased regulatory scrutiny, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) integration, and the growing influence of emerging markets. Looking forward, the paper projects the future of investment banking in the context of artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
