Abstract

Environmental deterioration, climate change, resource depletion, and greater awareness of ethical production are all having an impact on consumer behavior and business practices. The global fashion industry is changing. In the last ten years, the idea of sustainability has shifted from a marginal notion to a strategic necessity, forcing fashion businesses, governments and consumers to rethink their traditional modes of production and consumption. It is therefore not surprising that sustainable fashion is a multidisciplinary field covering environmental stewardship, social responsibility, ethical sourcing, circular economy principles and responsible consumerism. This review paper critically reviews the increasing demand for sustainable fashion by collating the available literature on the key drivers driving consumer’s preference, market evolution and future industry directions. The review uses a systematic narrative approach and is Keywords: Sustainable fashion; Consumer behavior; Sustainable consumption; Ethical fashion; Circular economy; Marketing of fashion; Consumer demand.

Full Article/Conclusion

The literature reveals that there is no single element responsible for the increased demand for sustainable fashion rather it reflects the interplay of environmental concerns, ethical awareness, regulatory interventions, technical advances, corporate innovation and developing consumer values. There is no doubt that this change has been spurred on by an awareness of the environment but the ongoing expansion of the market relies on consumers’ trust in sustainability claims, availability of sustainable products and brands’ ability to deliver fashionable, high quality offerings at a competitive price. The interplay of these drivers points towards a multidimensional market phenomenon in sustainable fashion, where environmental responsibility, social justice, technological innovation and consumer engagement collectively shape buying behaviour and the future path of the global fashion industry.
