This paper explores the intricate relationship between vernacular architecture and cultural identity in the rural landscapes of northern Tamil Nadu. It argues that the traditional building practices, material choices, spatial arrangements, and decorative elements of these vernacular structures are not merely practical solutions to environmental challenges but are deeply embedded expressions of the region’s unique cultural heritage, social structures, and belief systems. Through an examination of the key characteristics of these architectural forms, alongside an analysis of their connection to local traditions, rituals, and livelihoods, the paper aims to demonstrate how vernacular architecture serves as a powerful medium for preserving and transmitting cultural identity across generations in this specific region of Tamil Nadu.
