Abstract

Bus terminals in India serve millions of passengers daily yet remain poorly maintained, overburdened, and outdated in design. This transdisciplinary project, titled 'Visitor Route Guide,' investigates the modernisation of bus terminal infrastructure in India through a study of redevelopment objectives, design features, notable case studies, and existing challenges. The project proposes a smart, inclusive wayfinding and navigation system — the Visitor Route Guide — that integrates digital signage, mobile navigation, accessible information kiosks, and a real-time data platform to transform the passenger experience. Drawing on Computer Science (smart systems, data platforms, AI-assisted navigation) and Civil Engineering (spatial design, green building standards, structural planning), the project concludes that people-centric, sustainable, and technologically robust terminal design is achievable when both disciplines work in concert. Key outcomes include a detailed feasibility analysis, actionable policy recommendations, and a conceptual prototype framework for future implementation.

Full Article/Conclusion

This project successfully demonstrated that transdisciplinary collaboration between Computer Science and Civil Engineering can produce richer, more practically viable solutions to complex public infrastructure challenges than either discipline could achieve alone. The following conclusions were drawn: •                  Bus terminal redevelopment in India is not merely a matter of improving physical infrastructure but a holistic transformation of urban mobility, requiring coordinated action across technology, design, policy, and governance. •                  The Visitor Route Guide concept — integrating smart signage, mobile navigation, accessible kiosks, and a real-time data platform — provides a technically feasible, financially viable, and socially impactful solution to the navigation and information gaps in Indian bus terminals. •                  Inclusive design, when embedded from the beginning of the design process (rather than added as a compliance measure), does not compromise efficiency and significantly expands the user population served. •                  Government policy frameworks (Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, FAME II, NITI Aayog guidelines) provide a supportive enabling environment, but institutional capacity at the implementation level needs significant strengthening through technical assistance and knowledge sharing. •                  The success of terminal redevelopment projects ultimately lies in implementation quality, genuine stakeholder collaboration (including citizens), and long-term maintenance commitment — dimensions that policy and technology can support but not substitute for. •                  If executed with the right priorities, India’s bus terminals can become benchmarks for sustainable, inclusive, and smart public transport infrastructure.
