Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining popularity as sustainable alternatives to conventional gas-powered vehicles that rely on batteries for operation. Although grid-based EV charging is the current standard, solar-powered EV chargers present a promising alternative by providing clean energy and contributing to environmental conservation. This project focuses on designing and developing an advanced solar-powered EV charging station integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The charging station harnesses solar energy to charge EV batteries, offering a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution. The key components include solar panels, energy storage systems, and smart grid connectivity, all of which are managed by an Arduino UNO and ESP8266 Wi-Fi module. Real-time data, such as current, voltage, and energy consumption, were monitored and uploaded to an IoT platform, allowing remote access and analysis of the charging process. Additionally, the system is connected to the grid for real-time tariff rate monitoring and optimizes charging based on cost-efficiency. For demonstration purposes, a motor was used to simulate the EV load, which showcased how the system could manage and control the power flow. This project highlights the integration of renewable energy with smart technologies to create a sustainable transportation ecosystem, addressing the critical issues of energy sustainability and carbon footprint reduction.

Full Article/Conclusion

Although solar-powered EV charging with IoT monitoring is a sustainable and intelligent solution, several technical, operational, and economic challenges limit its large-scale implementation. ·                  Solar energy is not constant and depends on environmental conditions, such as sunlight intensity, weather changes, time of day, and seasonal variations. This causes fluctuations in power generation, making it difficult to maintain a stable energy supply for EV charging without backup systems in place. ·                  The system requires multiple components, such as solar PV panels, MPPT controllers, battery storage units, power converters, and IoT devices. The integration of both energy and communication systems increases the installation cost and makes the overall system more complex to design and maintain. ·                  Battery energy storage systems are necessary to store excess solar energy; however, they have limitations, such as limited capacity, degradation over time, long charging times, and high replacement costs. These constraints affect the continuous availability of the stored energy. IoT-based monitoring relies on communication networks such as Wi-Fi, GSM, and Bluetooth. In many cases, network coverage may be weak or unstable, leading to issues such as data transmission delays, signal loss, and unreliable remote monitoring
