The widespread and continuous digital revolution challenges the core assumptions of companies, forcing managers to reconsider operations and business plans and academics to reconsider related theories. To assist these efforts, we offer a thorough evaluation of research on companies' digital transformation, building a database of 537 peer-reviewed academic articles and analysing it using a state-of-the-art, multi-layered methodology. The framework separates the operations of an organization into three layers: its core activities, its peripheral activities, and its external environment. We find that businesses that have experienced major changes are more embedded in platform ecosystems with blurred corporate boundaries. In relation to this, we discover that centralizing and decentralizing power across organizational levels clash during a company's digital transformation. We also look at how these dynamics affect firms' internal and external boundaries as well as corporate strategy.

In conclusion, the retail industry is changing due to digital transformation, which presents both opportunities and difficulties. Retailers may improve consumer experiences, increase efficiency, and obtain a competitive advantage by effectively integrating digital technologies. However, issues like supply chain management, labour training, data privacy, and omni channel integration need to be carefully addressed. Retailers can successfully navigate the digital era and prosper in an increasingly competitive market by implementing cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and digital payment systems, coupled with a strong focus on cybersecurity and staff development. In order to better understand and predict consumer behaviour and provide individualized experiences that boost customer loyalty, merchants must strategically utilize technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics. In the end, digital transformation is a continuous process rather than a one-time endeavour. Retailers will be well-positioned to prosper in a changing market if they embrace innovation, put security first, and concentrate on upskilling their employees. In order to ensure long-term growth and competitiveness, retail must properly integrate technology with customer-centric strategy.
