Abstract

The organized grocery retail sector in Andhra Pradesh has witnessed remarkable structural transformation over the past decade, driven by rapid urbanization, changing consumer preferences, and intensifying competitive dynamics. Logistics management practices — encompassing procurement, warehousing, transportation, inventory control, cold chain operations, and last-mile delivery — have emerged as critical determinants of operational performance and sustainable competitive advantage. This empirical study investigates the relationship between logistics management practices and organizational performance among 142 organized grocery retail firms operating across six major districts of Andhra Pradesh. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to logistics managers, store operations heads, and supply chain executives during 2023–2024. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. Findings reveal that warehouse management efficiency (β = 0.48, p < 0.001), last-mile delivery optimization (β = 0.41, p < 0.001), and cold chain integration (β = 0.36, p < 0.01) are the strongest predictors of retail performance. Technology adoption — particularly IoT-enabled tracking and AI-driven demand forecasting — moderated these relationships significantly. The study contributes a context-specific logistics performance framework for emerging market grocery retail and offers strategic implications for practitioners and policymakers aiming to strengthen the retail supply chain ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh.

Full Article/Conclusion

This empirical study provides systematic evidence on the logistics management-performance relationship among organized grocery retail firms in Andhra Pradesh. All six hypothesized logistics dimensions — procurement efficiency, warehouse management, cold chain integration, transportation efficiency, inventory management, and last-mile delivery — demonstrate significant positive effects on retail performance, with warehouse management and last-mile delivery emerging as the most powerful predictors. Technology adoption significantly moderates these relationships, amplifying the performance returns from logistics capability investments. These findings underscore the strategic centrality of logistics management as a source of competitive advantage in organized grocery retail and highlight specific performance improvement levers available to firms operating in Andhra Pradesh's diverse and dynamically evolving retail market. As the state continues its economic ascent — driven by infrastructure development, urbanization, and rising consumer incomes — the ability of organized grocery retailers to build robust, technology-enabled logistics capabilities will be a defining determinant of their long-term competitiveness and contribution to the state's food retail ecosystem.
