The introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1, 2017, marked a major milestone in India’s indirect tax reform agenda. By replacing multiple central and state taxes with a single tax framework, GST aimed to simplify taxation, improve compliance, and facilitate the free movement of goods across the country. The retail sector, which relies heavily on efficient logistics, inventory control, warehousing, and transportation, has been significantly influenced by this reform. This study examines the effect of GST on supply chain performance in the retail industry. The analysis focuses on key dimensions such as logistics efficiency, inventory management, warehouse optimization, transportation effectiveness, and overall operational performance. The study is based on secondary data collected from government publications, industry reports, and academic literature. The findings suggest that GST has contributed to supply chain integration, reduced logistics bottlenecks, enhanced warehouse utilization, and improved operational efficiency. However, issues relating to compliance requirements, technological readiness, and working capital management continue to pose challenges, particularly for small retailers.

The introduction of GST has played an important role in improving the efficiency of retail supply chains in India. By establishing a uniform tax structure across the country, GST has simplified the movement of goods and reduced barriers to interstate trade. These changes have contributed to better logistics management, more effective warehousing practices, improved inventory control, and lower transportation expenses. In addition, GST has accelerated the adoption of digital technologies, including GSTN, E-Way Bills, and electronic invoicing systems, which have enhanced transparency and coordination among supply chain participants. Despite these advantages, retailers—particularly small and medium enterprises—continue to face challenges related to regulatory compliance, technology investments, cash flow management, and workforce training. Overall, the study indicates that GST has positively influenced supply chain operations in the retail sector and supported its modernization. Continued efforts to simplify compliance procedures, strengthen digital infrastructure, and provide training support can further enhance the effectiveness of GST and improve business performance.
