The National Education Policy 2020 aims to transform India’s education system through major reforms such as the 5+3+3+4 school structure, emphasis on foundational literacy and numeracy, multidisciplinary higher education, and flexible learning pathways like the Academic Bank of Credits. It promotes skill development, vocational training from early stages, and the integration of technology to create a more holistic and learner-centered approach. The policy is expected to improve access, equity, employability, and research output by 2030–2040. However, its success depends on addressing key challenges such as funding gaps, large-scale teacher training, digital divide, and effective center-state coordination, making strong implementation and stakeholder participation essential.
KEYWORDS
The National Education Policy 2020 marks a significant step toward transforming India’s education system into one that is flexible, inclusive, and future-oriented. By emphasizing foundational learning, multidisciplinary education, skill development, and the integration of technology, the policy aims to prepare students for the demands of the 21st century. However, the true success of NEP 2020 depends on effective implementation, including adequate funding, strong teacher training, and proper infrastructure. Challenges such as the digital divide and coordination between central and state governments must be addressed carefully. If implemented successfully, NEP 2020 has the potential to improve learning outcomes, enhance employability, and position India as a global knowledge hub, contributing significantly to the country’s social and economic development.
