In today’s global economy, skills play a very important role in determining employment opportunities and economic growth. Rapid changes in technology, such as automation, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms, have changed the nature of work across the world. As a result, there is a growing need for a workforce that is skilled, adaptable, and capable of continuous learning. India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 focuses on developing such skills to prepare students for both national and international job markets. This paper aims to study the role of NEP 2020 in promoting skill development to meet the requirements of the global economy. The study is based on secondary data collected from government policy documents, international reports, and research articles. It discusses the major skill-related reforms introduced under NEP 2020, such as the introduction of vocational education from an early stage, flexible and multidisciplinary courses, emphasis on digital and technological skills, industry–institution collaboration, and encouragement of lifelong learning. The paper explains how these reforms help in reducing the gap between education and employment by improving employability and workforce readiness. It also highlights how skill-based education supports economic growth, productivity, and global competitiveness. However, the study points out certain challenges in implementing NEP 2020, including lack of infrastructure, digital divide, insufficient teacher training, and uneven regional development. The paper concludes that NEP 2020 provides a strong framework for skill development in India. Proper implementation, adequate investment, and active participation of industries and educational institutions are necessary to achieve its objectives. If effectively implemented, NEP 2020 can significantly help in preparing India’s workforce to face the challenges of the global economy.

The National Education Policy 2020 represents a significant step towards transforming India’s education system into a skill-oriented and globally competitive framework. By emphasizing vocational education, multidisciplinary learning, digital skills, and industry collaboration, NEP 2020 addresses the critical challenges of employability in a globalized economy. However, effective implementation requires coordinated efforts, adequate investment, and institutional support. If implemented successfully, NEP 2020 can play a crucial role in preparing India’s workforce to meet the demands of the global economy and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
