Abstract

The current study's intent was to analyze the mechanical properties and the synergistic properties of hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (HYFRC) with metallic and synthetic fiber. HYFRC uses hybrid combinations of rigid steel fiber and a flexible polymer in order to improve the overall resilience of structural elements as opposed to conventional concrete, which possesses inherent properties of brittleness and low tensile strength. Based on the experimental data collected, the hybrid configuration (HY-Mix) achieved a compressive strength of 42.30 MPa and a split tensile strength of 5.12 MPa at 28 days, compared to the control mix (single-fiber). Visual inspection and microstructural analysis through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray radiography demonstrated a consistent fiber distribution throughout the matrix structure with a strong bridging mechanism to provide a means of ductile behavior instead of brittle failure modes.

Full Article/Conclusion

To achieve composite material uniformity, polypropylene fiber was added to the dry-mix prior to the addition of steel fiber. The polypropylene fiber prevented the heavier steel fiber from settling out of solution. Casting for each experimental group was performed using the same standard moulds and mechanical vibration of the cast was used to encourage maximum compaction. Following casting, the specimens were water-cured for 7 and 28 days prior to mechanical testing.
