Abstract

The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has intensified global interest in advanced battery technologies capable of delivering higher energy density, improved safety, longer lifecycle performance, and enhanced sustainability. As transportation sectors worldwide transition toward decarbonization, battery innovation has emerged as a critical enabler of electric mobility. This review critically examines recent advances in electric vehicle battery technologies, focusing on three interconnected dimensions: battery materials, battery management systems (BMS), and sustainability considerations. The study synthesizes contemporary research published between 2018 and 2026, highlighting developments in lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and emerging alternative chemistries. Significant progress has been observed in cathode and anode materials, electrolyte engineering, thermal management techniques, and artificial intelligence-enabled battery management systems. These advancements have improved battery performance, charging efficiency, operational safety, and lifespan while reducing degradation rates. Despite technological progress, several challenges remain unresolved, including critical mineral dependency, battery recycling inefficiencies, supply chain vulnerabilities, environmental impacts of raw material extraction, and economic constraints associated with next-generation battery production. This review further evaluates sustainable battery development strategies, including circular economy approaches, second-life battery applications, and advanced recycling technologies. Through a systematic analysis of existing literature, the study identifies key research gaps and proposes an integrated conceptual framework linking battery materials innovation, intelligent management systems, and sustainability objectives. The findings suggest that future EV battery ecosystems will increasingly rely on interdisciplinary innovations combining materials science, digital intelligence, and sustainable manufacturing practices. The study contributes to both academic research and industrial practice by offering comprehensive insights into emerging trends, technological opportunities, and strategic pathways for accelerating the transition toward sustainable electric mobility.

Full Article/Conclusion

Electric vehicle batteries represent one of the most strategically important technologies supporting the global transition toward sustainable transportation. This review examined recent advances in battery materials, intelligent battery management systems, and sustainability-oriented battery lifecycle strategies published between 2018 and 2026. The findings reveal significant progress in high-nickel lithium-ion batteries, silicon-based anodes, solid-state batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and sodium-ion batteries. These innovations offer substantial improvements in energy density, safety, charging performance, and resource efficiency. Simultaneously, artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins, and IoT-enabled battery management systems are transforming battery operation through enhanced monitoring, predictive maintenance, and lifecycle optimization. Despite these advancements, critical challenges remain. Resource scarcity, environmental impacts of material extraction, recycling limitations, manufacturing costs, and supply chain vulnerabilities continue to affect the long-term sustainability of battery ecosystems. Addressing these issues requires a holistic approach integrating technological innovation, intelligent operational management, and circular economy principles. The proposed framework demonstrates that future EV battery development must move beyond isolated technological improvements and embrace system-level integration. Advanced materials, intelligent management systems, and sustainability strategies should be developed concurrently to maximize performance, economic viability, and environmental responsibility. As governments, industries, and researchers continue to accelerate electrification efforts, the next generation of battery technologies will play a decisive role in achieving global climate goals, energy security objectives, and sustainable mobility transitions. Continued interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation will therefore be essential for realizing the full potential of electric vehicle battery systems in the decades ahead.
