The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a transformative shift in India’s educational landscape, emphasizing holistic development, multidisciplinary learning, curricular flexibility, experiential pedagogy, and the systematic integration of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). This paper critically examines the philosophical and structural possibilities of meaningfully integrating the ancient Gurukul model with contemporary institutional education within the NEP-2020 framework. While modern pedagogy prioritizes specialization, technological integration, measurable outcomes, and standardized assessment, Gurukul pedagogy emphasizes experiential learning, ethical cultivation, dialogical inquiry, and personalized mentorship. By bringing these complementary paradigms into constructive dialogue, this study proposes an integrated pedagogical framework aligned with NEP-2020’s commitment to equity, excellence, and inclusivity. It argues that such synthesis can address pressing educational concerns, including fragmentation of knowledge, examination-centric culture, declining ethical integration, and imbalance between technical skill acquisition and moral development. The proposed model aspires to nurture learners who are culturally grounded, globally competent, critically reflective, innovative, and socially responsible. By harmonizing tradition and modernity, the paper envisions an educational ecosystem capable of responding to contemporary global challenges while preserving India’s rich intellectual heritage.
KEYWORDS
NEP-2020 provides a historic opportunity to harmonize tradition and modernity within India’s educational landscape. By synthesizing Gurukul pedagogy’s ethical and holistic foundations with modern pedagogy’s scientific rigor and technological strengths, India can cultivate learners who are intellectually competent, ethically grounded, culturally aware, and globally competitive. The proposed integrated framework addresses contemporary educational challenges by restoring ethical orientation, promoting interdisciplinary coherence, and encouraging reflective inquiry. Such an approach embodies the essence of holistic education—balancing knowledge, skill, character, and social responsibility. If implemented thoughtfully, this model can serve not only as a national reform strategy but also as a globally relevant paradigm for educational transformation in the twenty-first century.
