This paper presents the design and implementation of an RF-Assisted Autonomous Vehicle Navigation and Collision Avoidance System that integrates Radio Frequency (RF) communication with Infrared (IR) sensing to achieve reliable, real-time vehicular control. The proposed system employs an Arduino Uno microcontroller as the central processing unit, interfaced with 433 MHz RF transceiver modules, an IR sensor, an L293D motor driver, DC motors, and a 16x2 LCD display. Unlike conventional sensor-only systems that fail under adverse visibility conditions, the RF-assisted approach enables inter-vehicle (V2V) communication, allowing vehicles to anticipate and respond to each other's proximity and motion before physical sensors engage. Experimental results confirm obstacle detection accuracy of 93.3% within a 30 cm range, sub-second response times averaging 0.43 s, RF communication reliability over 80-100 m, and an overall navigation success rate of 94%. The system demonstrates a cost-effective, scalable foundation for intelligent transportation applications in fog, rain, darkness, and other low-visibility environments.
KEYWORDS
This paper presented the design, implementation, and experimental validation of an RF-Assisted Autonomous Vehicle Navigation and Collision Avoidance System. By combining 433 MHz RF-based V2V communication with IR-based short-range obstacle detection on an Arduino Uno platform, the system achieved over 90% obstacle detection accuracy, sub-0.5-second response times, and a 94% navigation success rate across varied environmental conditions. The RF communication layer extended the system's collision-awareness beyond the line-of-sight range of onboard sensors, demonstrating a clear advantage over conventional sensor-only architectures. Future work will explore LiDAR or ultrasonic sensor integration to extend detection range, mesh-network RF protocols for dense multi-vehicle fleets, AI-based predictive path planning using machine learning models, GPS integration for long-range navigation, and intelligent power management for extended battery life. Large-scale outdoor trials across diverse weather and road conditions will further validate system reliability for real-world deployment in smart transportation infrastructure.
